I am a specialist in Old Norse literature (and to a lesser extent other ancient Germanic languages and literature), focusing on myth, and particularly representations of magic, and on Siberian shamanism and Finnish mythic traditions.
I studied at Oxford University, first in Classics (up to Moderations), then in English language and early English literature (with special papers in Old Norse). After two years of study in Finland, I returned to Oxford for my doctorate, supervised by Ursula Dronke, on Germanic and Finno-Ugric/Siberian mythical traditions (particularly shamanism); the external examiner was Åke Hultkrantz. I also undertook study at Munich under Kurt Schier during my doctorate. I was a Frances Yates Fellow at the Warburg Institute in London. I am a docent at Turku University, Finland, in the folkloristics department.
Apart from my academic studies, I am a typesetter, copy-editor and translator, my focus being on academic works.
I have a PGCE, and have enjoyed working with children, though I have not held a full-time teaching post. I ran Ravenspell Club at the Queen's Lower School in Chester for many years, devoted to Norse myths and other Viking activities, and also the Latin Club.
Other interests include music – I have sung in various choirs, with my main interest being in medieval and Renaissance music, and I play the viola da gamba a little. I have an Open University Diploma in Music.
I also enjoy visiting gardens, and attempting to grow a few things in our small garden.
I have a general interest in languages, but at present I am attempting to deepen my knowledge of Scottish Gaelic and Gaelic traditions. I try to attend occasional courses at Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, which is always a great experience.
I don't do social media or blogging. Ars longa, vita brevis.
